Consider the Matryoksha doll

But prepare to go deep. Russian nesting dolls turn out to be a thing.

My journey down the rabbit hole started in the very smallest hours of last night when, trolling the A+R site, I spied this set of Maison Martin Margiela blank nesting dolls. I recalled seeing them once before, and noting that they’d feel quite at home on my fireplace mantel.

Soon, I was thinking about this set of Pussy Riot stacking dolls. Remember them from last summer?

A hunch told me to head to Etsy, where a world of cute unspooled before my eyes. Isn’t it great how these rubber stamps have the same dimensions as the characters on South Park?

Zombie/Matryokshas seem like a natural, in a zeitgeist-stacked-on-zeitgeist  kind of way.

You have not truly fallen inside the headspace of the Matryoksha universe until you’ve visited one of its several single-topic Tumblrs—like for instance F**k Yeah, Matryoksha.

That’s where I found this stacking-doll-as-good-and-evil tattoo. There is so very, very much Matryoksha body art. Click here and see.

Not quite ready for that kind of commitment? How about these cute little measuring cups instead?

  1. Kismet that you mention this tonight. I’m sorting through our Kiwi-ana to take to my kindergartner’s talk tomorrow on our time in New Zealand. We bought her a set of Maori nesting dolls as a momento just before we moved back to the States a few years ago. Her classmates will get a kick out of the fierce (yet adorable) little warriors sticking out their tongues.

I have those measuring cups, and red, laser cut vinyl matryoshkas from etsy border my kitchen walls. Their powerful geometry makes them great for decorating.

We have also been giving them to our kids as Christmas gifts for several years. There seems to be a matryoshka for any age and interest, and no one in our family has yet outgrown the fun of nesting dolls.

You were on Etsy looking at Matryoshka dolls and didn’t find mine?! :)

I think we have four sets of wooden ones, a plastic set, and a couple of stuffies. My girls love them.
Pretty sure someone on Etsy sells blank sets, so you could have your own Margiela-esque set (or the Pussy Riot one, which is, in fact, a riot).

Don’t know how I missed yours–very cute! Although there was SO much Matryoshka that at a certain point I developed a kind of Matryoshka snow-blindness..
