  • I’m with these guys: Vogue’s fashion spread pairing Sandy first responders with models wearing New York designers exemplifies just how tone deaf—and self-parodying—the fashion world can be.  (Double XX)
  • Eyelash jewelry is apparently a thing. (Daily Beast)
  • Generally speaking, I’ve got no real squabble with adults having whatever plastic surgery they desire: it may not be my cup of tea, but why should beauty only be the privilege of those who were born that way?  It’s a hella slippery slope, however: this story about the wild preponderance of South Korean women in their teens and twenties who’ve gone under the knife—many of whom feel they must alter their looks in order to enter the job market—is full-on freaky. (Jezebel)
  • I found this rundown of nine famous love songs and the people who inspired them thoroughly entertaining.  Who knew that it was Janis Joplin who Leonard Cohen, was thinking of when he sang “I remember you well in the Chelsea Hotel.”? And of all the people one wouldn’t imagine Anthony Kiedis with… (Flavorwire)
  • Fourteen words the English language is woefully incomplete without. (Mental Floss)

I learned that tidbit about Leonard & Janis in a documentary. Have always loved that song.

Strangely enough, as I am no Vogue fan, that spread doesn’t bother me, though that could just be because I’m way out west and not a New Yorker. It’s silly and cheesy, but I wouldn’t expect serious journalism from them anyhow. And it is better than saying nothing at all, I suppose.

Now, if I were a female firefighter, nurse or police officer, I might be asking, what am I, chopped liver? Someone should pose a bunch of them with male models, perhaps. And then what about the Occupy Sandy people… who would we pose them with? Barbers? (Kidding! I heart them.)

Those are really great words. I think Fremdschämen is my favorite.

considering many people are still homeless and in need of clothes and shelter due to sandy and yes i am a new yorker who was unaffected and volunteered, they should have donated the money to create this shoot and or created a fund to benefit sandy to make this acceptable, if so, not so egregious just tone deaf, if not ugh,D

I love that you used “hella” in this post. Enjoy San Francisco!

Kim, you have the best links. Thank you! Also, if I were Sinead O’Connor I’d be denying it too.

If the muse formThe Girl From Ipanema is really now 50 years old, then she was one year old when that song came out. Tall and tan and young and a baby?

I didn’t realize you could have that much facial plastic surgery. And is it me or do all of the Korean women pictured in the article end up looking Japanese?

I much prefer to know that I tartle on a near daily basis, rather than lose my mind.
