  • Wow, that was fast! Welcome back from the holidays and a big fat hello to 2013. Let’s hope for a year that’s peaceful, productive, and a whole, whole lot lighter on the drama (like for instance, let this be the end of that, please). But before we shut the door entirely on the year that was, let’s bid a fond farewell to the following New York places that, as of 2012, are no more. (Vanishing New York)
  • Talk about your list of list of lists. (New Yorker)
  • Here’s a big fat wet kiss of a Styles section piece about Brooklyn’s reigning style queen and all-around cool bean, Bird’s Jen Mankins.  (NY Times)
  • The time is always right to read a short history of sequins. (Threaded)
  • And for those of you who’ve still got the stamina to shop (yes, I’m looking at me) a whopping 100 post-holiday sales. (Racked National)

that article about jen mankins was nice for her but definitely ignored the history of style in bk. it made it seem as if style was suddenly born to bk b/c of mankins.

The article about the places that closed in 2012 was so sad! I don’t live in New York, but love visiting, and the little indie stores, restaurants, etc. are what give it such personality. I love eating at the delis in New York – I hope that they don’t close all of them! I understand that cities have to move forward, attract business, etc., etc., but if all the unique places close and are replaced with chain stores and restaurants, then it’s just a cookie-cutter city and there’s no reason to go there.
