Dear Lance Armstrong:

You are so busted.  Now it’s time to confess, and then apologize to the scores of kids who worshipped you; the cancer patients who found inspiration in you; your teammates; and just society in general for turning out to be such a profoundly serious fraud. You’re not a hero anymore, and unless you come forward with the truth you’ll continue to look like a coward. So do the right thing. A lot of people threw a lot of love your way over the years; now it’s time to throw them back some respect.

thank you for saying this. if I hear one more time how this doesn’t matter and that he’s done so much good for cancer I might barf. although I think his foundation will survive, mostly b/c it is such a behemoth, he is now the cancer that will rot it unless he give a full, earnest and honest CONFESSION and APOLOGY from him to his family, friends, teammates, business partners, fans and the general public. short of that, he is just a narcissistic egomaniac with an above average physical talent that he exploited with drugs and cheating.

Doesn’t this just make you sad? I live in Austin, and everyone is all about Lance. I’ve thought for a long time that he was kind of a jackass, but I also was impressed with his athletic success and cancer organization. Now I’m just disappointed and depressed by his story. I agree that he should come clean and apologize, but can you imagine how difficult that would be? This is why people kill themselves. They can’t deal with the huge distance between the story they’ve told about themselves, and the reality. Ugh.

this feels just like the Pete Rose thing all over again !! nooooooooooooo…

  4. c.w. says:

What a legacy to leave his children.

  5. Anne says:

Thanks for saying so eloquently what I’ve been trying to put into words forever.

  6. Rosemary says:

Yeah, agree, not shocking but sad the lengths (all) the Pros go to to win….

  7. lizzie says:

sorry but revenge must be sweet for his wife that he dumped with small children for tory burch, then dumped her for cheryl crow, then dumped her for ?. mr livestrong is now alone

  8. I’m completely fed up with lying public figures who, while telling lies to my face, demand my respect in the same breath. Basta. And my vote in November will, in part, be about that.

  9. Viajera says:

I don’t know. Maybe I’m naive, but I’m not sure about this. Prosecutors can scare people into saying things sometimes. It doesn’t seem open and shut to me. I’ve never been that into him one way or the other.

Otoh, it seems like this stuff is pretty common, in baseball too, and I agree that it needs to be shut down.

If it’s true, he certainly went to some lengths. The linked piece says the report says he stored and re-inserted(?) his own blood. Eeew.

  10. Kamila says:

Thank you for this digression – I could not agree with you more. I read the story earlier today on a local news site and they interviewed someone from LiveStrong who claimed that donations were up 14% since the story first broke a couple of months ago and he lost his TDF titles. He should just come clean and get it over with.

  11. Debra says:

I don’t think any of these kind of stories will stop until we stop holding athletes up as moral and ethical heroes. Professional athletes in all fields compete to win – bottom line. I’m not saying athletes who dope have an excuse, but I can see how it would be really hard to lose those sponsorships, endorsement contracts, millions of dollars in signing bonuses, and all the other perks of being number one if all you had to do was stick an needle in your arm to maintain that 10th of a second lead that keeps you in the front of the pack. Can you imagine how many teachers could live off of even 1% of what top athletes earn in a year?

  12. gablesgirl says:

Personally, I’d like him to just go away. He is a loser in my book. Sad part is, Like Komen before him, his charity’s grantees will suffer due to his stupidity.

  13. Melody Mcfarland says:

Man….he is the definition of “cad”

  14. linda says:

    This. Seriously.

  15. Amy says:

I don’t have much to add, other than to say he always struck me as arrogant and entitled, long before all this. I suppose he’s getting his comeuppance, but it’s all just kind of awful.

  16. Cat says:

Interesting information has come out that he was doping very early in his career. Could this have been the cause of his cancer?

Atheletes dope to get the big endorsements. Sad to say, in addition to their egos getting huge…their bank accounts do too.

It’s important to expose these behaviors to protect kids getting into the sport who may think this is the only way to win. And then, to level the playing field.

Finally, LA bullying his team members was the saddest part to me. If they didn’t dope like him – then they were out. He only won on the shoulders of his teammates.

    • Tricia says:

Kinda off the subject but really tired of people being blamed for one thing or another that gave them cancer. People just get cancer. It’s not revenge or karma just a really horrible disease that has no distinct cause.

Not saying that Lance Armstrong was right on this but no one deserves cancer.

      • Cat says:

Yah. Tricia. I know when I got cancer I didn’t blame myself. But honestly wonder about very young boys using some seriously strong drugs and the ramifications of that.

  17. meara says:

Hubris. My husband rides with a guy who refused to “get with the program.” I am amazed that people think these things will never come to light.

  18. pam says:

Never liked him ever. He is a lout, a liar and a cheat. Always has been.

  19. raegan says:

I think he’d be surprised how responsive the public might be if he stepped up and took full responsibility for his actions. Such an unusual event in today world might shock us into forgiveness!

  20. I’ve always that he was a putz. Now it’s confirmed.

  21. Decorno says:

I’d like to know why everyone is getting way more upset about Lance and baseball players lying about taking performance enhancing drugs instead of other things we should give more of a shit about. Why does Congress call baseball players to testify about steroids? I don’t care if they cheat. These are games for bored people who need a sports metaphor for their jingoism. I wish more people cared, for example, that about 20% of human genes are patented. I think that is something to be more concerned about. (I’d also like a handy pie chart telling me where all of the Komen and Livestrong foundation funds are going and what % covers marketing and operations costs… time to hit up Google to see how efficient these marketing organizations are.)
