Just when the world starts feeling like it’s all too much—what with mass murders and government operatives slowly whittling away at womens’ reproductive freedom—a big old celebrity cheating scandal comes along and really threatens to throw the planet off its axis. Seriously! Educated, adult grown women with good jobs are trolling gossip sites at work for new tidbits regarding Kristen Stewart’s affair with her married Snow White and the Huntsman director Rupert Sanders, and shooting emails to friends with messages that say things like: How could she do this to R-Patz? She never deserved him!
Are these the final days? Or are Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson as close as we’ll ever come again to an old school Liz-and-Dick-style bigger-than-life movie star couple upon whom many can project their fantasies? Meaning: nothing new, so let’s all move along? You tell me.

I dunno. This smells all fakey fakey to me. I call bullshit on this one. They want more people to go to their movies, so this is a convenient way to get into the news. And the whole kstew/rpat thing seems a little contrived to me as well.
“Are Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson as close as we’ll ever come again to an old school Liz-and-Dick-style bigger-than-life movie star couple upon whom many can project their fantasies?”
I hope not. I don’t think she holds a candle to Elizabeth Taylor. I saw the headlines last night and my first thought was that the rabid Twilight fans are going to completely freak out. I had a hard time believing that her and Robert Pattison were a couple. This cheating scandal feels fake to me too.
I’m having a hard time caring. I agree with Daphne, no way is this young lady the Elizabeth Taylor of our times.
I’m with you there. But, I’m wondering, are she and Robert as Liz and Dick as it gets anymore?
Oh, I hope not! Where are the over-the-top diamonds, the scandalous (as opposed to just gossip-generating) on-set affairs?
I go for option 2. What’s more appropriate for times of trouble than a little break to gossip about the sex lives of the attractive and wealthy?
I never got swept up in the Twilight drama (on screen or off), so I’m not worked up about this at all. I tried to think of a celebrity couple that I would see as “Liz and Dick” (although I’m a little too young for them). I honestly can’t think of one. So am I one of those people who is too wrapped up in her own world to project on celebrities? Or are there no couples who seem so perfect together anymore? Something to ponder for me.

Maybe it’s a “final days” sign that no-one’s calling BS on *Sanders* on this one? I mean, the “scandal” is sad for R-Patz, certainly — but why is the harsh online criticism around this incident directed solely at K-Stew?? The poor girl is a college-aged *kid* — famous or not, she’s practically a child — who was inappropriately played by a married, middle-aged a-hole who couldn’t stop himself from preying on his pretty young star.
Think about it: Sanders was KS’s *director*, so he had quite a lot of power within their dynamic. And he already *has* a beautiful, porcelain-skinned brunette wife nearly a decade younger than himself. Did he really need to go and behave like a complete creep and take advantage of his directorial relationship with KS to try to get in her pants?
Ugh, “older men” are gross…. )-:
I agree with you on the director’s part in this. While I think KS should be accountable for her actions (though I believe that is between her and her boyfriend, not the Twilight fans), I’m annoyed that the media seems to be metaphorically shrugging their shoulders about his role in this, his age, and his marital status, once again making the woman the evil temptress and the man the hapless victim of her charms.
But as the partner of an older man, I feel duty bound to point out not all of them are gross old geezers…
I agree with Lauren’s view. And why are beautiful young people like K and R in long term relationships anyway? I remember many relationship missteps at K’s age, but glad to be safe from worldwide humiliation and judgement.
But why do we care?
I think it’s pretty natural to be a part of a conversation on pop-culture happenings. Did this affect anything in my day? Not particularly. But the question was posed on a website I like, so there you go.
I meant WE, as the world! I’m just so over this sort of thing, ya know? These people don’t DO anything, and it’s not like they are even amazingly talented. Kristen Stewart looks pretty with smokey eye makeup. That’s all I got.
This post made me laugh out loud, Kim. And being that I was one of these grown women trolling the interwebs about it I really should not weigh in. In fact, I should probably go read a book.
Wait. What? WHO are these people???
Didn’t Dory Previn once write a song about this kind of thing?
She was interesting. And talented. These people aren’t.
Sorry. I have to get back to work.
AhhhhhhhhahahH love!
Really…who cares? Astonishing that it’s news.
