I eat your hate like love

Between my calling out Tavi and getting uppity over both Louis CK‘s and Marissa Mayer‘s comments regarding feminism, I have managed to engender more cranky comments from you guys over the past two days than I have in the entire life of this blog. So I’ve decided—what with Mercury being in retrograde and everything—to say what the hell and raise the stakes.

I like New Girl. Have at me.

  1. I love what you’re doing and hope you never stop.

That should be worth two cupcakes and a hot fudge sundae. All with rainbow sprinkles.

  2. ljchicago says:

I liked it at first, then didn’t like it because it was too much Zooey, but then I liked it again when the other characters took off. Especially Schmidt, who was nominated for an Emmy today. And even if you don’t like it, her clothes, her clothes! make it worth watching.

  3. Sarah says:

The episode where they go to Zooey’s Fancyman’s house party and Nick hangs out in his office the whole time is hilarious: “It smells like leather and Teddy Roosevelt and wistfulness.”

  4. Cortney says:

I appreciated both the Tavi and the MM comment, and I also like this Bikini Kill reference. I just listened to that song for the first time in ages yesterday.

  5. Kate K says:

So if we loved all of those comments, does that mean that you’re eating extra love or are you now eating hate? Hmmm. I definitely don’t want you eating hate. Either way, I have loved everything you’ve said on those topics and could not agree more about New Girl. It’s delightful and I think most of the people who don’t like it haven’t actually seen it. Youths!

  6. carmencatalina says:

I keep hoping I’ll like Zooey Deschanel, but so far, nope. I like her sister, though.

  7. Margie says:

Just started watching this on demand. Love! The ensemble is strong. Started with ZC as the lead with development into the 4 other characters. The game “True Americans”…hilarious.

  8. marjorie says:

i agree with you on marissa, louis AND tavi. everybody else can suck my left one.

also i love schmidt, and his farmer tan in that workout video only makes me love him more. also, though it is neither here nor there, this is a very good emmy season for the jews.

wait there’s some other margie commenting above me! craziness!

  9. Sharon says:

God I love this blog. Intelligent women hang here.

  10. EveVawter says:

I have not seen this story yet, but EVERYONE loooooves New Girl so I assume it must be okay. And I don’t think claiming you watch it makes you some polarizing hate-magnet because yeah, a lot of people like that story.

So KF, you need to raise the stakes. You can do better than exclaiming a fondness for a critically acclaimed sitcom starring an actress people really like. Example:

    I watch True Blood.

There. I said it. It’s dumb and cheesy and even though there are other stories I like way better like Breaking Bad and Downton Abbey and Louis and Luther I watch True Blood,

    I have shame.

I think my dumb vampire story is a lot more polarizing than your twee cute girl sitcom.

    I like GOACA confession time!

  11. Shona says:

Your site is the saving grace to some days, in equal parts hilarity and fun. I don’t think I’ve ever laughed so hard as during your mission to shop the unshoppable.
ALSO being allowed to be snarky when you feel like it is kind of the point of being a girl.
And also? LOVE New Girl although I was prepared to hate it because I HATED 500 Days of Summer and all of its pretension, but there you have it.

  12. Rachel says:

New Girl is *hilarious*. I don’t feel so alone now–thank you!

  13. EveVawter says:

Omg KF, did you hear about CO? I’m just sitting here watching the news, how awful

  14. Amanda says:

Kim, I completely agree with you about Tavi, Marissa Mayer and Louis C.K. Especially the point Marissa Mayer. I don’t understand why feminism is such a dirty word to so many people who wouldn’t have the jobs and freedom and lives they do without feminism. THANK YOU for saying it.

I don’t like New Girl, but whatever, everyone’s TV taste is different.

  15. Marianne says:

I love New Girl! But I mostly just like the boys on it. Zooey’s okay. Cece is gorgeous.

  16. pemora says:

ok, i was with you but i can’t co-sign on this. zooey irks the bejeezus out of me.

  17. I LOVE New Girl! I love your blog too, keep it up!

  18. c.w. says:

Agree regarding Tavi. Just watched Louis C.K. last night for the first time and loved his final scene with Parker Posey. Marissa Mayer needs to read up on the ground breaking feminists that paved the way to her new job in hopes that learning more about those women would give her a bit more appreciation.

  19. Adrien says:

I absolutely love New Girl, but more because of the boys. Zooey’s brand of quirk needs serious tempering and they do that really well.

  20. Amy says:

I’ve never seen the show, but I love you, love your blog and POV and wish you did this five years ago. And I posted your Marissa Mayer piece on FB. Truth to power and all that.

  21. Martine says:

Except for your enthusiasm for that silk long dress with the asymmetrical hem the other day, I endorse your message 100%!

  22. Laura says:

    me too

  23. Tonya says:

LOL! Totally agree on New Girl – the douchebag jar should be in every home:); totally disagree on Tavi; agree on Louis C.K.; and still trying to figure out the non-feminist /feminist thing (meaning I am one, she is too, should It bother me that she doesn’t want to say the F-word?).

My long winded way of saying I love this blog-it does everything a great conversation with my best friend does. So thanks!

  24. WCT says:

Yep, me too. I never read blogs but yours caught my eye and I enjoy your comments, even if I am often clueless as to who the people are. (Tavi??) I confess to also loving New Girl. I think Zooey is adorable. There. I said it. She doesn’t care if she is not a cookie cutter doll like every other girl out here and she loves what she does.
Blogs are only worthwhile if the writers take a stance which sometimes will generate disagreement. That means you are doing something right.

  25. Unfortunately, Zooey annoys the crap out of me. But I can’t hate on you because I’m still warming myself in the rosy afterglow of your AWESOME comment to Marissa Mayer. Bless you for that. (As for Louis CK, I love him so much that I’m trying to give him a second chance. But that sound you hear is funny feminists, everywhere, weeping).

  26. CMV says:

So glad you said what you said about TAVI. No argument that she is thoughtful and articulate, she is annoyingly over reaching in her referances and smarty pants attitude. Good for her ( and her parents early retiremnet) for making it into a money maker. With regard to MM, unless we want our human rights abolished, we’re all feminists – whether we like the label or not. Sadly, the women who most need to talk about this probably don’t have the luxury of hanging out on a blg reading and passing comments. They’re working low paying jobs with no health care benefits and trying to literally put food on teh table.

  27. Nalini says:

I love her and hoped to love the show, but got bored. Maybe I will try again!! Keep speaking your mind. Who cares what people say!!!

  28. Cher says:

Love you & your POV, occasional snark very much included. I’m with you on New Girl, Louis CK (equal parts hilarious and repulsive, human = mistake maker)and the dreaded f-word which really must be reclaimed by all sentient women.

  29. Kim says:

Keep at it! Love you, love this blog.

  30. Mockingbird says:

I was hating New Girl through the first third of the season, only sticking it out for my love of the Max Greenfield. And then they started focusing less on Jess and more on the boys, and it got good. And then it got better. And by the time Nick was raving about Fancypant’s office, I was totally in love.

I have loved this blog since I first found it. Now all we need is some Kim France Pants to make it perfect.

  31. Meg says:

I’ve loved New Girl, and had a girl-crush on Zooey D., since the first episode. I even forced my husband to watch it, and damn if he didn’t love it too (huge shock to me, but I kept my poker face). It’s quirky, but not too quirky. Sweet, but not obnoxiously so. Let’s hope the writers keep us smiling, and don’t jump the shark too soon.

  32. janet says:

You are awesome. I enjoy reading your perspective, whatever your opinion. Thank you for turning me on to Louis CK and that multi-reversible Loomstate dress. That sheath thing has become my summer go to. I only wish it wasn’t dry clean only :)

  33. Alexis says:

I just discovered your blog and I’m so delighted! You were the reason I was a Lucky fan and since you’ve left, well I won’t go into what I think of the magazine now. I like to think I’m a polite gal…until I have to be ‘that crazy bitch’

I do like New Girl and yes, mostly for the guys that play her roommate but hey, I’m not ashamed to admit it!

  34. lormac says:

I feel like I could have lunch with Zooey Deschanel and she would not make me feel like sh-t. Somehow I think that if I had lunch with Marissa Mayer, she would make it a point to make me feel that way. So no probs with your Yhe New Girl position.

(Of course, I am doing the old “vote for the guy you want ot have a beer with” which should not be used ot choose a President but is OK for choosing TV shows.

  35. Kristen says:

Omg, I love New Girl, too. I used to love Zooey (circa Elf and Failure to Launch) and then I started being super annoyed by her (100 days of Summer, etc), but now I love her again because of New Girl.

I am not of a certain age yet, but I love your blog. Rock on!
