Afternoon links

  • As this 1980 letter to a pen pal demonstrates, Morrissey was always pretty much Morrissey. (Letters of Note)
  • Smartypants Virginia Heffernan on why why Katie Holmes is a feminist icon.
  • Read about some John Hughes screenplays that never saw the light of day—the man apparently wrote scripts in his sleep—including one that would have starred Molly Ringwald and Matthew Broderick. (Splitsider)
  • The first two minutes of the new season of Dexter are right here.  Spolier: It takes up EXACTLY where it left off. (Warming Glow)
  • If you’re in New York this weekend and you’re one of those gourmand-ish types, this might be just be up your alley. (Refinery 29)

The link doesn’t go to the Morrissey article, but rather a canine wedding article. I was moved to google the Moz letter and whoa that was awesome. I live that man.

went to the Super Duper market yesterday — it was really very satisfying. although i had just eaten lunch (at Souen, no less), i managed to wolf down a fresh, Montreal-style sesame bagel with horseradish cream cheese (courtesy of Mile End), some pickled beets, sauerkraut, kvass, and gefilte fish (The Gefilteria), plus a few bites of Ethiopian food (Taste of Ethiopia). there was even a take-away blueberry crumble (don’t remember from whom). a food coma ensued.

and very sad there were John Hughes movies that never saw the light of day.

I’m very happy for Ms. Holmes, who I think is actually talented. I’m not sure the title “feminist icon” has been earned yet though. And I don’t know that the battle is over yet, either. I wish them all the best of luck though. When you reproduce with someone, it’s forever, regardless of the lawyers.

I don’t know if she’s exactly Gloria Steinem or Betty Friedan (true feminist icons) but I’m happy for Katie and her child.

As for Toledo, it’s not the small BFE backwater that people make it out to be. I know. I grew up there. And so did Gloria.

Thanks for that. I get tired of the assumption that just because someone grew up in “flyover country” (as an Ohio gal myself) they lack sophistication or intelligence.

Loved the Morrissey link, everyone is looking for at least one person who ‘gets them’

Whaaa? Molly and Matthew in an 80s romcom? Probably would have been TOO awesome. I’ll tell myself I wouldn’t have been able to handle it. :(
