Girl talk and other Friday links

  • HBO’s Girls finally has its debut on Sunday night!  The press has been a bit overwhelming, but let’s all promise in advance not to have a big Lena Dunham backlash, OK?   Lorrie Moore  posted this smart little bit about it on the New Yorker’s website recently (unfortunately Rebecca Mead’s fantastic 2010 profile is stuck behind the paywall) and today’s interview with Dunham from The Awl is rather amusing as well.
  • At last: the profile of Sea of Shoes blogger Jane Aldridge I think we’ve all been waiting for, courtesy of Texas Monthly.
  • Ever wonder what became of that hoary old anti-feminist Phyllis Sclafly ? Me neither, but The Frisky discovers that she’s up to her old tricks, warning a group students at the Citadel to “Find out if your girlfriend is a feminist before you get too far into it.”
  • Jon Stewart and Bill O’Reilly created comedy magic last night on the Daily Show in this clip courtesy of the Daily Beast.
  • Bill Murray gets invited to throw out the first pitch for the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field and surprises everyone by running the bases while he’s at it. Shine on, you crazy diamond.

I couldn’t deal with Jane Aldridge and her mother from the get-go, however many years ago that was. I freely admit it was just plain old envy; I couldn’t believe anyone would buy a teenage girl that many expensive shoes, or any at all. It was therefore most gratifying that the Texas Monthly writer took pains to make her appear like a mean-spirited shrew. This glee on my part is not especially flattering to my character.
